THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 17th State conference of the All India Kisan Sabha has firmly backed the CPI stand on the composition of the Food Security Mission and has called for its formation at the earliest with the Agriculture Minister as its chairperson. A resolution adopted by the Kisan Sabha conference here on Friday said that besides the Agriculture Minister, the Food Security Mission should have Ministers of Water Resources, Electricity, Local Self-Government and Rural Development, officials and experts as its members. The mission should be formed at the earliest and its programmes implemented with people’s participation. The Centre, the resolution pointed out, had mooted the concept of the Food Security Mission in the light of heavy shortfall in foodgrains production in the country. Initially, Kerala was left out of the scheme on the ground that no district which did not have 50,000 hectares of paddy cultivation could be included in it. Palakkad district was included in it later following strong hue and cry from MPs from the State. The Kuttanad rice belt, spread over Alappuzha, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Ernakulam districts, and the kole lands spread over Thrissur and Malappuram districts should also be included in it. Earlier, inaugurating the delegates’ session of the conference, Kisan Sabha general secretary Atul Kumar Anjan said the people in the country were deeply unhappy with the Manmohan Singh government. All India Karshaka Thozhilali Federation general secretary K.E. Ismail, MP, and AITUC State general secretary Kanam Rajendran addressed the inaugural session. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan inaugurated a seminar on land reforms held later in the evening.
