THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government proposes to create a buffer stock of six lakh tonnes of rice. Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran said here on Friday, of this 1.5 lakh tonnes would be produced from the paddy procured from the State itself and the remaining 4.5 lakh tonnes would be brought from West Bengal and Andhra. The formalities connected with the procurement of 1 lakh tonnes of rice from West Bengal had been completed. It would be transported to Kerala soon. Two types of rice were being procured from West Bengal. The Supplyco had started procurement of rice from Andhra also. The government planned to distribute the rice through the Maveli Stores at a price that was lower than that in the open market, the Minister added.
