DEHRA DUN: The Uttarakhand Government is likely to push through the controversial State Universities Bill with some modifications during the two-day State Assembly session beginning this coming Monday. The Bill, introduced earlier this year, was referred to a select committee after several members and teachers’ associations of Kumaon University and Garhwal University opposed the move to do away with the autonomy of the universities and appointment of Vice-Chancellors by the Government instead of the Governor who is also the ex-officio Chancellor. “We still oppose dictatorship over universities as they are supposed to be centres of excellence – a phenomenon that cannot develop under direct bureaucratic control,” said a Vice-Chancellor. He also wondered why the Government was bent upon adopting the Karnataka and Andhra models as these States themselves were trying to loosen the bureaucratic control.
