This Day That Age
Six persons are known to have been killed and eleven injured and twelve aircraft destroyed in one of the worst disasters in the history of aviation in India when an Indian Air Force Vampire jet aircraft plunged into a death dive at Safdarjung airport at noon, on May 8, and ploughed into the Flying Club hangar. Flt.Lt.O.P. Gera, the pilot who was taking back his limping aircraft to the base at Palam, died while being carried to Safdarjung hospital. The only other occupant of the plane, Flying Officer A.S. Kohli, is feared to have perished in the crash. The entire fleet of the Delhi Flying Club parked in the hangar were completely burnt in the fire.
