Teachers worked even on holidays Slow learners were identified at an earlier stage
Sweet taste of success: N. Ezhil, who secured first rank in Virudhunagar district in Plus Two examination, with her family members. VIRUDHUNAGAR: Virudhunagar district continued its dominance in the Plus Two examination by securing the top spot in overall pass percentage in the State for the 22nd successive year. With an overall pass percentage of 95.87, the district has registered its best performance ever since it was carved out of Ramanathapuram district in 1985. This is 1.5 percentage points higher than that of last year. Erode stands the second best this year also with a success rate of 93.5 per centage, say sources. ‘95’ breached
“This is the first time, we have broke into the 95-percentage-mark,” S. Nagaraja Murugan, district Chief Educational Officer, told The Hindu. Attributing the success to ‘Nootrukku Nooru’ scheme, he said the department had made early identification of slow-learners and special attention was given to them right from the first mid-term. “The teachers made lot of contribution by working even on holidays, conducting special classes in the mornings and evenings,” he said. “Students of S.S. Government higher secondary school were given free food for their night studies with the parent-teachers association fund. With the guidance of the Minister of School Education, Thangam Thennarasu, we adopted all possible steps to encourage the students,” Dr. Murugan said. Teachers were also given in-service training and students’ performance was periodically reviewed for all subjects. Stating that it was indeed a great achievement by the district, Dr. Murugan said that no school was allowed to filter the “weak” students in Plus One to boost their achievement in public examination. “In fact, the number of students who appeared this year has gone up by around 1,000 when compared to that of last year. We have accommodated more weak students this year,” he said. Centums go upThe number of schools that have achieved 100 per cent success too has gone up. Totally, 35 schools have made it this year. Among them are eight Government schools (out of 59 schools), 15 Government-aided schools (out of 56) and 12 matriculation schools (out of 22). Out of 15,677 students who had appeared for the examination, 15,030 have passed. Girls outnumbered boys in success rate, with 96.96 percentage as against 94.68 percentage of boys.
