CUTTACK: Cuttack is grappling with the increasing number of child labourers and the problem like elsewhere in the country is multi-dimensional. The National Child Labour Project (NCLP) has identified some 14,509 child labourers in the district in 2007. Among them, the male and female ratio is almost same while some 3,200 children, mostly boys were working in hazardous sectors. With a view to eliminate child labour, the Government of India has developed a child labour convergence model along with International Labour Organization (ILO). For this purpose, Cuttack district has been selected as a pilot district along with Kalahandi of the State. At least eight other districts in the country two each in Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have also been identified as pilot districts for the model. In order to identify the roles and responsibilities of various government departments and to promote a convergence-based child labour prevention and elimination model, a one-day workshop was held here on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Sherin Khan, a representative from ILO informed that there are some 218 million child labourers have now been identified of which about 122 million are working in hazardous sectors. Speaking on the occasion, the Cuttack Collector Sujata Karthikeyan said the local administration is making a sincere attempt to arrest the ill practice in the district.
