Smart candidates

The Election Commission has won kudos for the strict enforcement of the model code of conduct. Despite that, there have been violations of the code, with candidates coming out with novel ideas to beat the curbs imposed by the commission.

Take the case of a candidate who is contesting from the Belgaum South Assembly constituency. He is alleged to be “openly” distributing money to the electorate during his door-to-door campaigning. It is said that his supporters make a list of the members in a family and tell them to welcome the candidate with an “aarti.” When the women perform “aarti”, he reportedly gives them currency and requests them to vote for him. Then there is the BJP candidate in Gokak, Bhimshi L. Jarkiholi, who uses “SMS” to keep in touch with friends, relatives and well-wishers. He is sending Basava Jayanti greetings to all of them. But, in his over-enthusiasm he has been doing that as a BJP candidate.
