Shopkeepers fail to renew licence to carry out business

They owe arrears of Rs. 35 lakh to corporation

Shutting shop: A corporation employee sealing one of the HDMC stalls at the supermarket in Dharwad on Friday.

DHARWAD: The Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation sealed 45 of its stalls at the supermarket in Dharwad for failure to renew the licence and pay the stallage.

The officials and employees of HDMC lead by Market Inspector M.N. Puttannavar sealed the HDMC stalls despite some resistance by some of the shopkeepers.

According to corporation officials, these shopkeepers owed arrears to the tune of Rs. 35 lakh to the corporation and had failed even to renew their licence to carry out their business in these stalls.

Mr. Puttannavar informed that the stalls were seized following the direction of the Commisioner of Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation Ajay Nagabhushan.

According to HDMC sources, the shopkeepers who had taken the HDMC stalls on lease (paying stallage), had failed to honour the commitment they had made in the Lok Adalat and continued to run their business in these stalls without paying the stallage and also not renewing the licence.

A few days ago, the corporation had sealed 15 such stalls and Friday’s drive was a continuation of the same drive. The HDMC sources clarified that although there were around 667 stalls in the supermarket, action was taken against shopkeepers who had failed to respond to the notices served by the HDMC.

According to the sources, the shopkeepers had to pay Rs. 65 lakh to the corporation as stallage arrears.
