Pro-people policies will guarantee stable rule, says CPI leader

Staff Correspondent

Janapara Rajakeeya Ranga has fielded 50 candidates

MANGALORE: Government, even a coalition, will be stable if it implements pro-people policies and programmes, the State treasurer of Communist Party of India H.V. Ananthasubba Rao has said. The stability of a government is not ensured merely by having numbers on one side, especially in the present political context which is bereft of ideologies, personal or political morality. Incumbent governments are not adhering to these principles, he said.

Addressing a joint press conference with leaders of the Samajwadi Party, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) here on Thursday, Mr. Rao said the Janapara Rajakeeya Ranga — a coalition of the CPI, the Karnataka Sarvodaya Paksha, All India Forward Bloc and Republican Party of India (Athawale) — was striving to fill this political vacuum. “The ranga has fielded 50 candidates across Karnataka and is confident of winning in some areas,” he said. Observing that the land and the mine mafia has set out to capture the State Assembly, Mr. Rao said the ranga, which has constantly identified itself with farmers and labourers, would strive to make its voice heard in the Assembly.

Describing the JRR as an “undeclared broad Left front”, he said it was not staking claim to power, but was in the fray to take the pro-people movements of the Left up to the seat of power. On the issue of price rise, he blamed it on the economic policies initiated by the National Democratic Alliance government and continued by the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre.

Both these governments have failed to protect the interests of the common man, and some steps taken of late to bring down prices of essential commodities was due to sustained pressure from Left parties, he added.

Support

The CPI(M) district general secretary, B. Madhav, said while his party was not a part of the JRR, it was, however, extending support to constituents of the ranga, wherever they have fielded their candidates.

Terming this as a consolidation of the Left support, Mr. Madhav said the electorate in Karnataka was disillusioned with the misrule of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Congress, and were seeking a change hoping for good governance. S.P. Chengappa, president of district unit of the SP said his party was supporting the CPI and CPI(M) in the State to thwart the march of communal forces. In turn, the Left parties are supporting the SP candidates, he said.
