The lines of Ramanan, the famous play written in the form of verse by poet Changampuzha Krishna Pillai, may be known to almost all Malayalis. So far many films and theatre works have been adapted from the play. Now, two musicians in the city—Ajith Kumar and Dr. Sreevalsan J. Menon—are giving final touches to the musical interpretation of the masterpiece. Mr. Ajith is a Carnatic violinist and Mr Sreevalsan, a Carnatic singer. Mr. Ajith said, “The 60th death anniversary of Changampuzha falls on June 17. We are planning to bring out the work on that day.” The musical will have a touch of theatre, with individual singers giving their voice for lead characters. Mr. Sreevalsan will sing the lines of Ramanan and Kavalam Sreekumar of Madanan, Ramanan’s bosom friend. Renowned flutist Ku damaloor Janardhanan will also perform. The 80-minute-long musical will start with the scene where Madanan finds his friend dead. The story is narrated in a flashback. “The dialogues of characters are taken from the poem. The musical will be rendered on the basis of ragas” said Mr. Sreevalsan. Even after 72 years, the work has not lost its charm. “We realise the evergreen feel when we sit down to compose,” said Mr. Ajith. The work is on at the studio of Cochin Art and Communications.
