Bonanza in store for toppers of Corporation schools

CHEERS: A jubilant student crowd at the Corporation Girls Higher Secondary School, Madhavaram High Road, Perambur, after the results were declared on Friday.

Chennai: A bonanza of rewards awaits students of Chennai Corporation schools who have secured high marks in the class XII examinations.

Mayor M. Subramanian on Friday said the pass percentage in Corporation schools was 81 per cent this year.

About 150 students have scored 1,000 marks out of a total of 1,200 marks. Each of these students would be given Rs.1,000, the Mayor said.

The Corporation runs 27 higher secondary Schools and the top student in each of the schools would get a laptop in recognition of his or her merit.

“Individual performance has vastly improved this year. We have 10 students who have scored over 1100/1200 this year compared to only four last year. Similarly, 151 students have scored over 1000/1200 this year compared to 117 last year,” the Mayor said.

Eighteen students have got full marks in various subjects this year compared to only three last year. The teachers of these students would be honoured with cash prizes. Heads of nine Corporation schools that have secured over 90 per cent pass will also be awarded.

Scholarships

The civic body will provide Rs.25,000 each to 25 Corporation school students who gain admission to medicine and engineering courses. The support would continue for every year of their higher studies. Similarly, 25 students who joined teacher training and nursing programmes would be given Rs.5,000 per student per year and 50 students who pursued B.A./B.Com/B.Sc courses would be given Rs.3,000 per year.
