BJP sees a ‘hand’ in fire at party election office
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: The Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, and Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan on Friday expressed anguish at the alleged incident of arson which led to the gutting down of the party’s election office in Ward 7 of Delhi Cantonment which is due to go to the polls on May 18.
Following the fire at the party office, the two leaders visited Delhi Cantonment and formally lodged a complaint with the police.
They charged that bad characters and anti-social elements had in the recent past tried to disrupt the BJP election campaign in the area and expressed apprehension that the fire in the party office might also be a handiwork of such elements.
“An Indica car with four to five persons in it was seen near the party office around 2-30 in the morning and the fire had started soon after,” Dr. Vardhan said, adding that earlier too during the election campaign the BJP workers in the area had been violently targeted.
“On a couple of occasions even attempts have been made by men in cars to run down our workers,” he said.
Dr. Vardhan said the party had earlier written to the Police Commissioner and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) to seek protection for its workers and demand that the bad characters operating there be brought to book.
