Power bills eat into profits of self-help groups
M. Balaganessin
PUDUKOTTAI: No doubt, the reformed bootleggers of Kallukudiyiruppu village in Arimalam block in the district have been reaping the benefits of their floricultural activity, a vocation they have taken up for leading a decent life eight years ago.
Scores of reformed bootleggers have floated self-help groups in this village eight years ago and have been cultivating and marketing nurseries of floral plants, herbals and ornamental species.
But, much of their profit is eaten away by the power consumption bills.
“A good percentage of our hard-earned money is diverted to foot the power consumption bills,” says the Animator of one of the women self-help groups, C. Kamatchi.
They have set up a bore-well to irrigate the fields but even the power consumed by this is being reckoned on commercial tariff, she adds.
The power consumption charge ranges anywhere between Rs.15,000 and Rs.20,000.
Pointing out that they had completely given up their illegal activity of distilling and selling arrack, they said that the State Government should, as a special concession, exempt their vocation from the purview of the commercial activity and reckon it at domestic rates.
