Septuagenarian Dalit dies after vasectomy

KADAPA: A 70-year-old Dalit of Vontimitta Harijanawada, M. Bakkayya, who underwent vasectomy operation at Vomtimitta primary health centre recently after a middleman lured him offering an incentive, died last evening.

His condition turned serious two days ago and he was shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences at Kadapa on the advice of the police. He died while undergoing treatment. Led by CPI(M) leader Yanadaiah, family members and relatives of the deceased staged dharna before the PHC.

Rajampet DSP Krishna Kumar, Vontimitta Circle Inspector Umamaheswar Reddy and Tahsildar Sainath rushed to the place and pacified the protesters. The Tahsildar assured grant of assistance of Rs. 35,000 under Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana. Mr. Sainath disbursed Rs. 5,000 towards funeral expenses . The Vontimitta police registered a case against middleman, Venkataramana, and the medical staff in connection with the old man’s death.
