India should go ahead: Kalam

Bhubaneswar: The former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on Friday said India should go ahead with the nuclear deal with the U.S. and rejected suggestions that it would undermine the country’s sovereignty.

He said the deal would give a boost to India’s nuclear programme. “We have plenty of thorium but very small reserve of uranium and it will take a lot of time to develop a thorium-based nuclear reactor,” Mr. Kalam, who is on a visit here, told PTI.

India requires more uranium to carry forward its nuclear activities. The requirements would be met if India signs the deal, he said. Asked whether signing the deal will affect the country’s nuclear sovereignty, Mr. Kalam said: “India is an independent country and nobody can harm us.” — PTI
