Education Minister holds talks with managements They are to meet again soon for further talks THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Representatives of seven self-financing medical colleges have informed the State government that they are willing to offer scholarships for students in 50 per cent of the seats if they are allowed to collect Rs.2.6 lakh as fee in the management quota. Students to the 50 per cent merit seats will be admitted according to merit from the rank-list prepared by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations. Admissions to the management seats will be made either from the same rank list or from a list prepared on the basis of a separate entrance examination conducted by a consortium of medical college managements. The managements have demanded that the government get any accord reached between them and the government ratified by the Supreme Court. These offers were made during discussions between the representatives and the Education Minister M.A. Baby here on Saturday. Representatives of the MES medical college, Kannur medical college, Karuna medical college, the Gokulam medical college, Karakkonam medical college, Pariyaram medical college and the SUT medical college participated in the discussions. State’s proposalIn their discussions with Mr. Baby, representatives of 20 self-financing nursing colleges demanded that they be allowed to collect the same fee that they did last year — Rs. 80,000 for the management quota and Rs.49,000 for merit seats. The representatives told Mr. Baby that it would be highly impractical to collect deposits from students joining the nursing programme. The government has suggested that nursing college managements collect Rs.80,000 as fee and Rs.1.5 lakh as deposit for management seats, Rs.20,000 as fee and Rs.1 lakh as deposit for merit seats and Rs.2 lakh as fee and Rs.1 lakh as deposit for the NRI quota. Mr. Baby told the representatives that he would get back to them in about 10 days after discussing these proposals at Left Democratic Front forums. Mr. Baby told presspersons after the meetings that eight of the 12 medical colleges in the self-financing and cooperative sectors had expressed their willingness to work with the government on the issue of fee and seats. “We will meet again in seven to 10 days for further discussions. Parents and students need not have any anxiety. The question of fee will be decided well before the admissions begin.”
