Champion of the poor honoured
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: France’s highest civilian award was conferred Friday on Father Pierre Ceyrac for his life of service to the poor and marginalised in southern India.
Father Ceyrac, a native of France, moved to India in 1931 as part of the Madurai Jesuit Mission. He devoted himself to alleviating the sufferings that man inflicted on man, whether working for independence from colonisers and freedom from caste in India, or tending to refugees fleeing from the clutches of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, or soothing those suffering in the ethnic clashes in Rwanda. Presenting the 94-year-old with the award, French Ambassador to India Jerome Bonnafont said he had become a legend of universal love and commitment to the improvement of human dignity.
