CUTTACK: The former President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on Saturday exhorted the youth to work hard with “perseverance” to transform their dreams into reality.

Delivering the first convocation address of Ravenshaw University here, Dr. Kalam said:

“When dreams transform into thoughts and thoughts get into action with knowledge, then all problems will be defeated and goals achieved.”

Speaking to the students after presenting medals and awards, the missile man-turned-people’s President said that he visualised a new India by 2020 with 10 great profiles.

Positive factors

“India, in the next 12 years, will have a very thin line dividing urban and rural areas, abundant quality energy, best destination for science and technology research, quality healthcare facilities, responsive governments, reduced illiteracy and a conglomerate of entrepreneurs, administrators, service providers and farmers,” Dr. Kalam said, adding that India would be the best place in the globe to live in by 2020.

Governor and Chancellor of the university M.C. Bhandare, in his address, dwelt on the past glory of the institution that started as a college some 140 years ago and grew to the status of a university in November 2006.

Mr. Bhandare hoped that the university would successfully disseminate knowledge, wisdom and understanding through its innovative methods of teaching and research.

‘Quality matters’

“All-out efforts are to be made to promote education in accordance with universal declaration of human rights and to improve the quality of education through diversification of contents and methods,” the Chancellor asserted.

Vice-Chancellor Devdas Chhotray said Ravenshaw University would emerge as a “synergetic” knowledge centre for the South-Asian region.

He said the university was passing through a phase of resurgence.

“With a view to rediscovering Orissa for the younger generation, Ravenshaw has envisaged a Centre for Understanding Orissa to develop the art of seeing and understanding a culture,” Mr. Chhotray said.

At least 21 students who secured first class in different PG courses and 20 graduates securing first positions in graduation courses in 2007 were awarded gold medals.

Registrar Satyakam Mishra and Dean Nihar Ranjan Patnaik conducted the convocation ceremony.

It was attended, among others, by over 5,000 students, including several dignitaries of the city.
