Schools, colleges urged to participate in AIDS awareness drive

Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL: Madras High Court Judge Justice M. Jaichandran has called upon the educational institutions and non-governmental organisations to actively participate in HIV/AIDS awareness programmes.

Inaugurating the Legal Services and AIDS Awareness Core Group camp at Pothanur near here on Thursday, he said that it was very important to raise the level of awareness among people, particularly those living in the rural areas, to check the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Students and NGO volunteers should come forward to take up awareness programmes. The Law Department was working in close co-ordination with the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society to raise awareness and provide assistance to the people living with HIV/AIDS.

There was a significant increase in the level of awareness among people in Namakkal district, following the efforts made by the State Government and various agencies, the Judge pointed out. The district had 7,327 persons living with HIV/AIDS and they were being given treatment at the Anti-Retroviral Therapy Centre functioning in Namakkal Government Hospital premises.

He said that over 3.54 lakh cases were settled through Lok Adalats held in the State. Over 12,000 cases were settled in the first three months of this year alone.

Concerted efforts were being made to dispose of the pending cases in the courts in the State, the Judge added.

District Revenue Officer G. Govindaraj and Superintendent of Police John Nicholson spoke.

Principal District Judge A. Ratnavelu presided.
