HOW TO tackle DISASTERS: Policemen attending the programme in Puducherry on Saturday. PUDUCHERRY: The Police Department, in association with the Revenue Department, started a three-day orientation course on disaster management for the personnel at the Police Training School, Gorimedu, on Saturday. Collector G. Thevaneethi Dhas said that the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management would be conducting more training programmes for the policemen, medical and paramedical staff and the officials belonging to other departments involved in rescue and relief operations. The department would procure the equipment required for relief and rescue operation during natural calamities, Mr. Dhas said. In his inaugural address, Inspector-General of Police S. Vasudeva Rao stressed the need for more such training programmes for the policemen as the possibility of natural calamities could not be ruled out owing to the climate change. He appealed to the policemen to familiarise themselves with the nuances of disaster management so that they would be able to act fast and with efficiency. Personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force, the Fire Service Department and St. Johns Ambulance held a demonstration of various rescue operations. Ten police officers and 50 constables attached to the Pondicherry Armed Police and the Home Guards participated in the programme.
