HASSAN: Additional District Magistrate K. Subbaraya Kamat has said that Hassan district recorded a polling percentage of 68. Speaking to The Hindu, he said Ariskere recorded the highest voter turnout at 67 per cent, and Sakleshpur the lowest. The figures computed were as of 4.30 p.m. on Saturday. Superintendent of Police K.V. Sharatchandra said hardly any untoward incident had taken place in the district. In the Government Urdu Primary School in Arsikere, about 200 Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) activists gathered and were about to clash. To diffuse the tension, the police resorted to a mild lathi charge. No case had been registered, he added. Mr. Sharatchandra said there was a minor scuffle in H.D. Deve Gowda Nagar in Hassan. MisconstruedThe polling officer there was replying to queries posed by voters with regard to the use of the electronic voting machine, which was misconstrued by BJP candidate Hullalli Suresh who thought he was directing their vote. On a complaint by Mr. Suresh, the Returning Officer and he (Mr. Sharatchandra) rushed to the spot. When the polling officer convinced the Returning Officer that he was replying to a query by a voter, the candidate was convinced.
