Will the star win?

Shankar Bennur

SRIRANGAPATNA: Women came out in full force to vote in most polling booths of Srirangapatna constituency where actor-turned-politician M.H. Ambareesh is fighting a crucial battle of his political life.

The constituency which has favoured only women candidates since 1989 and thereby earning the distinction as the segment “reserved” for women, recorded 68 per cent polling (preliminary figures). When this correspondent visited Booth no. 144 in Bommooru Agrahara village, women were found waiting in a long queue to vote. Out of 594 votes, 369 had cast their votes by 1.45 p.m. There was brisk polling in Palahalli, Belagola, Arakere, Kodiyala, Naguvanahalli and Krishnaraja Sagar villages. Although the initial response was lacklustre, voting progressed as the day wore on, particularly after 11 a.m., as women came in sizeable numbers after finishing their daily chores. When a woman voter in Srirangapatna was asked about her choice, pat came the reply: “Ambareeshavarige.” Mr. Ambareesh, who was elected thrice to the Lok Sabha from Mandya, has a large fan following in the district. “If women have come in big numbers to vote, then Mr. Ambareesh has a bright chance of winning,” said a few local people.
