Textile sector in distress: Elangovan

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The textile sector is in distress and the Centre is conscious of this fact, E.V.K.S. Elangovan said on Saturday.

Noting that there were several factors that had contributed to the problems experienced by the sector, Mr Elangovan said the fall in the value of U.S. dollar vis-À-vis Indian rupee and frequent disruptions in power supply were among the reasons.

He was talking to reporters after declaring open a buyers-sellers meet organised here by the Weavers’ Service Centre.

Acknowledging that the sector in Tamil Nadu was suffering from the “power cut” in some places, the Union Minister said he had been told that the State government was taking corrective steps on the power front.

Responding to State Textiles Minister N.K.K.P. Raja’s statement in the Assembly early this week that it was the responsibility of the Union government to take steps to contain the rising prices of yarn, Mr Elangovan said the Centre was contemplating action. Its decisions had to be implemented by States.

When asked about the status of the proposal of discharging effluents of dyeing and bleaching units of Tirupur into the sea, he said the State government was considering it.

The Union government would extend support for the implementation of the project.

He said requests had come from Uzbekistan and African countries to export cotton to India and this was under the consideration of the Union government.

Earlier, Mr Elangovan exhorted the domestic handloom sector to explore the possibility of exporting its products to countries other than the United States and Europe.

Vishwanath Shegaonkar, State Handlooms, Khadi and Textiles Secretary, presided over the meet.
