Inflation: Scindia defends Centre

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Union Minister of State for Information Technology and Communication Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday claimed that the rate of inflation was influenced by the external factors.

He was responding to questions raised by the media over the soaring prices of essential commodities under the United Progressive Alliance’s regime.

Mr. Scindia was here to campaign for Congress candidates from the region in the State Assembly elections.

Mr. Scindia said under the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance regime, the inflation was at 7.8 per cent and the Gross Domestic Product was growing at 6.8 per cent in the last quarter of 2001-02.

The country then did not face the kind of pressure from external markets that itw as facing now.

“The international crude oil price was $ 32 a barrel then and it is $ 127 now,” he said.

Mr. Scindia said the UPA Government had not passed on the cost to the common man.

Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Renuka Choudhary spoke.
