Showers bring relief from heat wave

Chandigarh: People in most parts of Punjab and Haryana got a much needed respite from heat wave conditions after rains lashed several parts on Saturday.

This Union Territory and its adjoining areas were lashed by light showers and the skies were cloudy. Ambala received 10.6 mm rain while Hisar 1.5 mm, the Meteorological Department said here.

Karnal (4 mm) and Rohtak (1 mm) were among other places in Haryana to be lashed by showers.

In Punjab, Madhopur (5 mm), Pathankot (2 mm), Amritsar (1 mm), Ludhiana (2 mm), Patiala (4.2 mm), Balachaur (2.4 mm) and Mukerian (1 mm) were among the places to be lashed by rains.

Shimla received 3.1 mm, the Met office said.

It said the weather in the region had changed owing to a western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining north-east Afghanistan, an upper air cyclonic circulation over Himachal Pradesh and neighbourhood while another such circulation was active over central Pakistan and adjoining Punjab.

The maximum temperatures today are likely to settle under the 40 C mark in the region, the Met said. -- PTI
