Power discoms to promote use of CFLs

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The public sector power distribution companies in Rajasthan have formulated a plan to popularise the use of energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) for both domestic and commercial purposes and generate public awareness to save electricity through environment-friendly methods.

Jaipur Vidyut Vitaran Nigam will shortly sign an agreement with a manufacturer for supply of CFLs directly to the consumers at a subsidised price of Rs.15 apiece instead of the market rate of Rs.100. The Chairman of the three power discoms, R.G. Gupta, said the manufacturer would supply 25 lakh CFLs in the first phase of the scheme.

Mr. Gupta said at a meeting with Union Power Secretary Anil Razdan here over the weekend that the manufacturer would also give 2.5 per cent carbon credits to Jaipur discom with the supply of CFLs.

Mr. Razdan asked the State Government to send the draft agreement to the National Bureau of Energy Conservation for examining the scope for its implementation.

Mr. Razdan is also reported to have evinced a keen interest in the feeder renovation programme launched in the State and was impressed by its positive impact on the power supply to the rural areas.

The Power Secretary visited Harirampura village near Bassi in Jaipur district, where electricity is being supplied round the clock after successful completion of the feeder renovation programme. Mr. Razdan also met Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and praised the power sector reforms carried out in the State.
