President Pratibha Patil presents the Padma Vibhushan award to Ratan Tata at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Saturday. NEW DELHI: The former administrator and diplomat, P.N. Dhar, industrialists Ratan Tata and Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, the former Chief Justice of India, Justice A. S. Anand, scientist and co-winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize Dr. R. K. Pachauri, Delhi Metro Corporation chief E. Sreedharan and the world chess champion Viswanathan Anand were honoured on Saturday with the Padma Vibhushan for their outstanding contributions in their respective fields. Padma BhushanRadio commentator Jasdev Singh, eminent economist and teacher Lord Meghnad Desai, former Home Secretary K. Padmanabhaiah, noted economists Kaushik Basu and Padma Desai, playback singer P. Susheela, industrialist Suresh Kumar Neotia, noted medical scientist and researcher Nirmal Kumar Ganguly and former civil servant Viswanathan Ramachandran were among the recipients of the Padma Bhushan from President Pratibha Patil. American astronaut Sunita Williams, who is of Indian origin, and Konkani litterateur Ravindra Kelekar could not come to receive the Padma Bhushan award.

As many as 37 persons received the Padma Shri award. Among them were the Jammu University Vice-Chancellor Amitabh Mattoo, Bollywood heroine Madhuri Dixit Nene, film-maker Manoj Night Shyamalan, actor Tom Alter, Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans, footballer Bhaichung Bhutia, scientist K.L. Chopra, wonder grower of mangoes Haji Kaleem Ullah Khan, physician R.K. Jain and NDTV’s managing editor Barkha Dutt. By far, the loudest rounds of applause in the chandeliered Ashoka Hall were reserved for P.N. Dhar, Ratan Tata, Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Viswanathan Anand and Bhaichung Bhutia.
