GAZA CITY: Hamas militants fired rockets at southern Israel on Saturday, hitting a house and a Jewish seminary just hours after Israeli air strikes killed five Hamas policemen. The flare-up in violence began on Friday when Hamas militants fired mortar shells that killed a 48-year-old Israeli man in his house near the Gaza border. The fighting threatened Egypt’s bid to broker a ceasefire on the Gaza-Israel border. Hamas militants said they fired 15 homemade rockets at Israel on Saturday. Nobody was hurt in the barrage, which came just hours after Israel retaliated for the deadly attack by firing missiles at two Hamas police stations late Friday, killing five militants. Also in Gaza, officials said they turned off two of three turbines at a power plant that provides electricity to hundreds of thousands of Gazans. — AP
