Stray tusker tramples woman to death

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: A lone tusker now separated from the elephant herd from Chandaka elephant sanctuary has started to create havoc in Beguniapada block of Ganjam district. This tusker trampled a woman Hema Sabar (45) to death at Sandhamuli village while she was busy collecting cashew nuts in a cashew orchard on Friday. On Saturday the villagers blocked the Beguniapada-Berhampur road for several hours demanding compensation to the family members of the deceased. The Chatrapur sub-collector, Ajit Mishra reached the spot and pacified the angry villagers with a payment of Rs.5,000 for the funeral rites of the deceased.

The Berhampur Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), A.K.Jena said usually tuskers stray out of the herd and during their lonely movements they are more attacking in nature.

He said the forest officials are busy educating the villagers of Beguniapada block regarding the dos and don’ts when they see wild elephants near their village.

The attacking tusker was part of the herd that had strayed out of Chandaka elephant sanctuary near Bhubaneswar around seven months back.

They had reached Ganjam district via Barunei in Khurda district and the Nalabana bird sanctuary of Chilika lake.

After getting driven out of Nalabana the herd had entered Naryani jungle in Ganjam district.

After that the herd had continued to create havoc in several areas of Khallikote, Beguniapada and Chatrapur blocks of Ganjam district.
