ERODE: The Chennai incident of two couples fighting over the parentage of a baby boy a month ago has repeated itself in Erode. With a slight modification, though. Papa, a rag-picker, and Sundari, who lost her child at the government hospital, Erode, a month ago, have laid claim to a baby that was in Papa’s possession. The Erode Town police said Papa was found moving with a four-six week-old boy under suspicious circumstances at Thirunagar Colony on Friday morning. As her answers were contradictory, the police took her to the government hospital, where Sundari claimed the baby to be hers. The police said Papa claimed that she had given birth to the child at the hospital in the third week of April. Hospital records, however, showed that a woman by the very name had given birth to a child, but a few days earlier and not on the date Papa mentioned. Hospital sources said preliminary tests conducted on Papa suggested that she did not give birth to a child, nor was she nursing the baby. The police said the address Papa mentioned and the one found in the hospital register were different. Hospital authorities have recommended that a DNA test be conducted to put the issue at rest. The child is now at the hospital. Sundari, who was delivered of a baby boy at the hospital on April 19, lost the child the next day after a woman claiming to be a family friend took him away on the sly. Soon after the incident, she lodged a complaint with the Town police.
