DMA unhappy with pay panel proposals

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Medical Association has appealed for review and immediate remedial measures to correct what it considers a “raw deal” for doctors in government service following the Sixth Central Pay Commission recommendations.

Remedial measures

“The rise in pay for doctors is to the tune of three to eight per cent only as compared to others in the same scale whose pay has increased by between 20 and 40 per cent. This gross injustice to doctors would have an adverse impact on the state of public health service. This needs to be addressed immediately with effective and early remedial measures,” said the honorary state secretary of the Association, Ashwini Dalmiya.

He said the relative advantage for doctors in government service had been reduced due to the recent recommendations.

“The hard work, long training and high cost involved in making a doctor is not being translated into better emoluments in the public service. As a result, doctors are not joining government service and several are leaving the country,” said Dr. Dalmiya.

Other demands

The Association has demanded that the benefits of non-practising allowance and consequent dearness pay as given by the Fifth Pay Commission be considered for fixation of pay in all calculations to ensure that the doctors are not losers as compared to other services.

Also all doctors in government services, including the Central Health Service and Delhi Health Services, should get a higher starting salary at induction level and those drawing the scale of Rs.14,300-18,300 pre-revised should be placed in Pay-Band 4, it said.
