Teachers’ concern over questionnaire
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: The Democratic Teachers’ Front has expressed concern over questionnaires sent recently to universities and colleges by the Pay Review Committee of the University Grants Commission as it fears that the views of the academia might not get “duly represented”.
“We are concerned that on a varied range of issues bearing on the problem of flight of talent from the teaching profession, the Committee has sought the views of university and college administrations only. The views of the academia do not get duly represented . The exercise may, therefore, lead to wrong and disastrous conclusions,” said DTF president Shaswati Mazumdar, urging the Committee to discuss the issue with the teachers’ association and seek their views on the same.
“The questionnaires sent separately to the universities and colleges have a common part titled ‘General Questions’. The structuring of this part is a matter of concern. Seemingly it has opened up the debate for and against further hierarchical differentiation within the teaching profession in higher education. But it has placed too much of emphasis on seeking choices from among myriad forms of differentiation. The DTF is of the opinion that such differentiation is inappropriate,” she said in a statement.
