MANGALORE: Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) broke the Congress rally led by Union Minister of State for Information Technology and Communication Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday. Members of the CPI(M) blocked the road as Mr. Scindia’s cavalcade passed in front of their party office in Nehru Maidan area. As soon as trouble erupted, Mr. Scindia and other senior party leaders accompanying him left the scene leaving the party functionaries to joust with the Marxists. Mr. Scindia was campaigning for the party’s candidate for Mangalore South, Ivan D’Souza. Sources in the party said that Mr. Scindia was taken to the house of U.T. Khader, a Congress hopeful from Mangalore. The protesters were miffed at the “blatant violation” of the model code of conduct by the Congress. Their grouse was that the Congress was campaigning in the streets using a loudspeaker. Speaking to The Hindu after the event, the Democratic Youth Federation of India district unit president Muneer Katipalla expressed concern over the purported violation by the Congress. “It happened in front of the media, the police and electoral officials,” he said.
