Bangalore: The stringent norms on campaigning imposed by the Election Commission had its effect on polling day, too, as political parties were not allowed to put up any structures in the guise of kiosks to assist voters even 100 metres away from the polling booths. Strict codeThe commission this time had banned temporary structures for the kiosks, permitting political parties to depute only three workers and use one table and three chairs to assist voters in finding their serial numbers in the voters’ list. These norms discouraged the gathering of party workers.Further, the parties were barred from campaigning with caps, saris and other dresses bearing party symbols around the polling booths. EffectiveThis measure virtually prevented arguments or clashes between workers of different parties over persuading voters at the last minute. DisciplineMeanwhile, discipline was maintained at a majority of the polling booths as the security personnel allowed only voters who had identity cards recognised by the commission inside the premises where the booths were located. This step prevented the entry of miscreants or political party workers in the guise of voters.
