Thrissur: M.A. Yusufali, NRI industrialist who received the Padmashri recently, was felicitated at a function on the Nattika beach on Sunday. Inaugurating the function, the senior Congress leader K. Karunakaran spoke about the contribution of NRIs to the State’s development. “I recall Mr. Yusufali’s contribution to the construction of the Nedumbassery airport. At his initiative, an amount of Rs. 150 crore was collected for constructing the airport. Many discouraged me from accepting NRI contribution for airport development. But I was committed to accepting the amount. I knew that NRIs sincerely wanted their homeland to develop and be a part of the growth process,” he said. Mr. Karunakaran and Fisheries Minister S. Sharma handed over a memento on behalf of the people of Nattika to Mr. Yusufali. Revenue Minister K. P. Rajendran presided. Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana yogam general secretary Vellapally Natesan; T.N. Prathapan and Murali Perunelly, MLAs; P.K. Kunhalikutty, Indian Union Muslim League leader; M.M. Hassan, Congress leader; and C.K. Padmanabhan, Bharatiya Janata Party leader; were present. Earlier, a procession was held in honour of Mr. Yusufali. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who was scheduled to inaugurate the function, did not participate.
