PUDUCHERRY: From the indications for the use of pacemakers to its working and costs, Interventional Cardiologist G. Elangovan highlighted various factors about the equipment during a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme here on Sunday. Speaking on the topic ‘All that you wanted to know about pacemakers,’ Dr. Elangovan outlined the types of pacemakers and their functions. The size of the pacemakers, be it temporary or permanent, was reducing over the years, he said. The use of pacemakers came in conditions wherein the heart rate reduced below 40 per minute. This was often seen after heart attacks or in cases of congenital heart diseases, he added. On the future of pacemakers, he said the equipment would be replaced by stem cell transplantation which was in the research stage. The CME was organised by St. Joseph’s Hospital (Cluny). Chief Executive Officer of the hospital H. Ranganath spoke.
