Exemption from NET sought

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Democratic Teachers’ Front has called upon the University Grants Commission to continue with the present position of exemption of M.Phil and Ph.D candidates from the National Eligibility Test (NET).

The DTF has taken exception to the reported move of the UGC to withdraw exemption granted to candidates possessing M. Phil. and Ph. D degrees from the requirement of clearing the NET in order to become teachers in higher educational institutions.

“It is unacceptable that such a move is based on an argument by the Bhalchandra Mungekar Committee (entrusted to review NET) that the quality of research and the degrees in some universities is not of high standard. It is precisely the job of the UGC to redress the situation. A test like the NET itself has been questioned by the academia,” claimed DTF president Shaswati Mazumdar in a statement this past week.
