A word of caution on water crisis
Staff Reporter
BAPATLA (GUNTUR DT): More than 60 countries, including India, are facing a water crisis and by the year 2025, India could be among the countries facing an acute scarcity of water, according to T.V. Satyanarayana, principal scientist and project manager, A.P. Water Management Project, Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University. The assumption was based on the per capita consumption of water which presently hovers around 1,500 cubic metres per individual and could well go down to 1,000 cubic metres by the year 2025, he told The Hindu on Sunday. Mr. Satyanarayana, who also completed a Post Doctoral Fellowship, returned after attending the 14th European Symposium on Water and Waste Water Management at Munich in Germany as part of a German Academic Exchange programme.
Delegates from 160 countries took part in the symposium held between May 5 and 9 and explored new ideas on preserving, replenishing and recycling of waste water. “The stress is on recycling of waste water, be it industrial affluent or domestic sewage. Where as the European countries have almost standardised the process of recycling of water through waste water treatment plants and sewage treatment plants, we are yet to catch up with these processes,” he said.
