Coimbatore: In a bid to deal with the soaring crime graph, the Coimbatore Rural Police have introduced ‘Community Security Guards’ for stepping up crime prevention patrolling in the hosiery town of Tirupur, police press release said. As a preventive measure in Tirupur town that accounted for a large number of migrant work force, the police have so far enlisted 100 people into the crime prevention team. These personnel have been provided with uniform and trained in patrolling activities. The police have planned to enlist the services of another 300 to 400 personnel in the days to come. In order to supplement the services of the police personnel, 25 home guards have been deputed for night patrolling. The measures were being implemented by the Deputy Superintendent of Police, P. Muthuraj, under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, G. Karthikeyan. The measures were being reviewed by the DIG of Police, Coimbatore range, Seema Agrawal, and the Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, Sanjay Arora. Ex-convictsDuring the current year alone, 1,273 crime prevention beats were conducted and the number of night beats was 5,119. So far, 34 ex-convicts had been picked up and as many as 548 persons had been brought under surveillance by taking them into custody and by obtaining their finger prints. The police also said that special teams were formed and sustained attention was paid in tracing 264 ex-convicts who had been remanded to judicial custody. During the preventive drive, the police have secured 181 suspicious persons in and around Tirupur town. To ensure that crime incidents never recurred, the police had resolved as many as four cases of theft, one murder for gain and one case of burglary. Four criminals were arrested and had been detained under Goondas Act. In the case relating to robbery on Perunthozhuvu Road, the police arrested four out of the five accused and a sum of Rs. 1.75 lakh and the car used for the offence had already been recovered. In cases relating to Anupparpalayam police limits, the police have already arrested six accused and properties worth Rs. 4.5 lakh have been recovered. In addition to all these, 10 special teams were already on the job of resolving the pending cases. To ensure smooth flow of traffic, 60 traffic wardens have been inducted into service.
