dated May 12, 1958: Soviet stand

Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, Soviet Prime Minister, said in Moscow on May 9 that Russia wanted a summit conference “as much as the West should want one”, but it would have to be on an “equal basis so that the interest of all sides will be taken into account.” Mr. Khrushchev, speaking at a Czech National Day reception to which Western correspondents were not invited, was reported by Communist journalists to have said Russia would live in an atmosphere of tension if necessary. “We have nerves as tough as Alpine rope, you can get everything out of us, but you will never frighten us. For 40 years they tried that, but never succeeded.”
