Two Odissi dancers to be honoured

The objective is to provide platform for young artistes

Young dancers to perform during the festival

BHUBANESWAR: Internationally acclaimed Odissi dancers Sangeeta Dash and Sujata Mohapatra would be conferred the Surabhi Samman - 2008 during the forthcoming sixth annual national Ekamra festival of dance and music commencing from May 13.

Pondicherry-based Sangeeta, a disciple of Akademi awardee Durga Charan Ranbir, is also an actress of Oriya films. Sujata is the disciple and daughter-in-law of the legendary Kelucharan Mohapatra. The Samman has been instituted by the city-based Surabhi dance institution that hosts the annual festival.

Announcing the honour here on Sunday, Surabhi founder-director and Odissi guru Pitambar Biswal told media persons that the festival was launched six years ago to strengthen national integration through Indian classical dance and music. Its other major objective was to provide a platform for the young artistes to perform as soloists. Dancers from various parts of the country are participating in this year’s four-day festival that would be mounted at the Open Air auditorium of the Ekamra Haat here commencing on Tuesday, he added.

Besides both the awardees – Sangeeta and Sujata – young dancers Pravat Swain, Rajib Bhattacharya, Ritimukta Panda, Manoranjan Nayak, Priyanka Malla and Ankita Rath are slated to perform in Odissi segment while Kuchipudi would be represented by Bangalore-based veteran dancer-choreographer Vjyanti Kashi’s disciple Sreelakshmy K.G. Similarly, Bharatnatyam dancer Jalsa Chandra and Kathak dancer Angshuraj Ghosh, both from Kolkata, would perform in the festival.

The concluding evening would witness a series of Odissi dance recitals.
