CUTTACK: Thanks to micro-vascular surgery made possible in Orissa, 21-year-old Balaram Nayak of Rajnagar block in Kendrapara district, who lost both his hands while working with a paper cutting machine, has got back the same. A team of plastic surgeons made it possible and he is recuperating in a private hospital here. The accident occurred at a private press in Bhubaneswar on April 20. After receiving initial treatment at Kalinga Hospital, the patient contacted the Cuttack-based plastic surgeon Bibhuti Bhusan Nayak. After studying the nature of injury and the magnitude of efforts required, a team of surgeons swung into action and started the surgery at midnight which stretched till next day late afternoon. The team, led by Dr. Nayak consisted R. Das, A. Patnaik, J.P. Biswal and M.R. Mallik. The patient started moving his fingers and the range will gradually improve with physiotherapy, Dr. Nayak said. “We had to rejoin two arteries, three veins and two nerves in each of the patient’s hands to ensure proper blood circulation,” Dr. Nayak said adding that physiotherapy for six months would ensure proper functioning of the hands. “This is perhaps the first double hand re-plantation surgery done in Orissa and we are not aware of any such surgery done anywhere in India,” Dr. Nayak claimed.
