IT deduction
Many pensioners were shocked to find that more than 50 per cent of their pension was deducted when they went to banks to withdraw their pension on March 1. Treasury office revealed that the money was deducted towards income tax. When they pointed out that their income is below the taxable limit of Rs 1.95 lakh, the authorities blamed it on the computers.
Now one has to file IT returns and the refund will take six months or more.

Raw deal
Senior citizens in our country rarely get a fair deal while their counterparts in developed countries are looked after better. In these days of price rise and scarcity they should be exempted from payment of house tax, water charges and other service charges. The seniors are elbowed aside in every sphere of life, at a service counter, bus journey or train travel.

Over-bridge needed
The distance between Chittoor and Tirupati is 70 kms and the normal journey time by public transport is 100 minutes.
There are four railway level crossings and in view of the conversion of the Tirupati-Katpadi line into broad gauge the rail traffic has increased resulting in the closure of the gates frequently.
There is an immediate need for an over-bridge at all the four gates. The Government if necessary can seek financial assistance from the TTD.
