Congress leader takes a dig at Arjun Singh

‘He, for long, nursed the ambition of becoming Prime Minister’

Bhopal: Senior Congress leader Subhash Yadav on Sunday criticised Union Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh for making critical comments about the party leadership in a book.

“General elections are round the corner and polls in Karnataka are going on....therefore, it is not proper for a seasoned leader like Singh to make comments about the party and its leaders. It seems he has some other intentions,” the former Madhya Pradesh Congress president told PTI here.

The book ‘Mohin Kahan Vishram’ (No Rest for Me), penned by journalist Kanhaiyalal Nandan, traces 51 years of political career of Mr. Singh. In the book, the veteran politician has made critical comments about the decision -making process and loyalty in the Congress.

Mr. Yadav said it was not proper for a leader to make objectionable comments about a party which has given him a platform to serve the people for more than 50 years.

“It is an attempt to damage prospects of the Congress in the Karnataka polls. The move by the senior leader is an attempt to damage the party’s reputation,” Mr. Yadav, who was earlier closely associated with Mr. Singh, said.

To a question, he said when Rahul Gandhi himself has said he doesn’t like to be projected as potential premier, then Mr. Singh’s statement on the issue was aimed at weakening Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s position.

“Is he (Singh) not indulging in sycophancy,” he asked.

Mr. Yadav said Mr. Singh, for long, nursed the ambition of becoming Prime Minister, but when he was convinced that there was no scope left for him to occupy the top post, he was making statements against the party and its leaders. -- PTI
