Rising mercury level hits poultry units

Staff Reporter

ELURU: The rising mercury proved to be fatal for poultry industry in the current summer in West Godavari district.

The mortality rate in poultry is on the rise in the district, sending shock waves across the farmers, thanks to oppressive heat conditions and sweltering weather. According to Komatlapalli Subba Rao, president of the district branch of the Poultry Federation, the poultry industry in the district has witnessed a 20 per cent drop in egg production this year. Mr. Rao, a farmer of 2 lakh birds from Kaldhari near Tanuku, said death of five per cent of birds was reported across the district due to the rising temperature. In a desperate bid to save the birds from the deadly heat conditions, the farmers were using fans, foggers and sprinklers.
