Officers to promote vermicompost, nadep compost

Special Correspondent

KADAPA: Principal Secretary of Agriculture and Cooperation Pankaj Dwivedi on Sunday instructed agricultural officers to promote vermicompost and nadep compost along with green manure in pungamia and jetropa plantations.

Addressing a review meeting with the departmental officials in the Collector’s camp office here, he said there was no shortage of fertilizers but traders were creating artificial scarcity.

He asked Collector M.T. Krishna Babu to take appropriate measures on the aspect. Nadep compost would be useful in all seasons, the principal secretary said. On the other hand, vermicompost would be effective in normal conditions but earthworms would perish in the hot summer. Farmers have been achieving bumper crop yields in Maharashtra, where nadep compost was being effectively used in the last five decades, he said.

Excessive use of fertilizers was leaving potassium and sulphur deposits in lands and hence farmers should be advised to reduce use of fertilizers after conducting soil tests, Mr. Dwivedi told agricultural officials. Farmers should be motivated not to use pesticides, unless when absolutely necessary, he said. He enquired about the seed availability and told officials to ensure timely supply.

He assured establishment of an integrated pack house at Rayachoti and to construct sheds to tomato growers of Devapatla in Sambepalle mandal. Collector M.T. Krishna Babu assured steps to ensure supply of seed to farmers.

He also promised to promote use of nadep compost in the district. Deputy director of agriculture Chinna Narayana, assistant director of horticulture Dharmaja, District Cooperative Central Bank manager Nagaraju, and others participated.
