Mridhangist Subramania Pillai remembered

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Rich tributes were paid to the legendary mridhangam maestro Palani Subramania Pillai, one of the foremost exponents of the Pudukottai school, here on Sunday.

Addressing the function was organised by the Palani Subramania Pillai Trust and the Narada Gana Sabha Trust to observe his birth centenary, N. Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu, and president, Music Academy, said Subramania Pillai belonged to a galaxy of vidwans who not only enthralled the audience but also passed on their artistry to the future generations.

Mr. Murali explained how Chembai Vaidhyanatha Bhagvathar persuaded the late violinist Mysore Chowdaiah to swap his position in the concert dais so that Subramania Pillai, a left-handed mridhangist, could sit on the left side of the main artist. “Chembai also toned down the mathematical intricacies of Subramania Pillai’s mridhangam playing and made them sound aesthetic.”

Sangeetha Kalanidhi M. Balamuralaikrishna said it was Subramania Pillai who encouraged him to settle down in Chennai so that he could further his musical career. He also inaugurated a web site on the mridhangam maestro.

Recalling his close association with Subramania Pillai, violin maestro Lalgudi G. Jayaraman said his first concert in the ‘nootrukaal manapam’ at Malaikottai was arranged by the late maestro. “He provided the opportunity to accompany late Madurai Mani Iyer at the marriage of late actor T.S. Balaiah. In fact, he brought Balaiah to my house at Saidapet. Palghat Mani Iyer played the mridhangam and Pillai the kanjira,” he reminisced.

Mridhangam maestro T.K. Murthy said it was unfortunate that Pillai was not honoured during his life time.

Postal cover

A special postal cover was also released.

M.S. Ramanujan, Postmaster-General, Chennai City region, released the cover. R. Krishnasami, secretary Narada Gana Sabha received it.

Guruvayur Dorai, a disciple of Pillai, welcomed the gathering. Another disciple K.S. Kalidas proposed a vote of thanks.
