Tirupati
Festive cheer: The ‘Dhwaja Patam’ taken out in a procession inside the Sri Govindarajaswamy temple in Tirupati on Monday. TIRUPATI: The annual Brahmotsavams at the TTD’s Sri Govindarajaswamy temple got off to a traditional start with ‘Dhwajarohanam’ on Monday. Even as the Vedic pundits chanted hymns from the scriptures and the traditional percussionists and wind instrumentalists played melodious tunes, the priests hoisted the flag atop the flagpost at 9.45 am in the auspicious ‘Mithuna Lagnam’. The temple chief priest N.A.K. Srinivasacharyulu acted as ‘Kankana Bhattar’ by tying the sacred ‘Kankanam’ on his wrist, thus accepting the responsibility for the smooth conduct of the nine-day festival. Earlier, the holy flag (Dhwaja Patam) bearing the image of ‘Garuda’ was taken in a procession on the streets encircling the temple. A cavalcade comprising the deity of Lord Govindaraja on one side and the members of his royal court-Chakrathalwar, Ananta, Garuda, and Vishwaksena on the other, went round the temple. This event is believed to be a ‘mock supervision’ of the arrangements ahead of the annual fest. TTD’s Chairman B. Karunakar Reddy, Executive Officer K.V. Ramanachari and Deputy EO (Local Temples) A.Vasudevan were present on the occasion. Later the deity of Govindaraja was taken out in a colourful procession on ‘Pedda Sesha Vahanam’.
