Supporters of criminal force shopkeepers to down shutters PUDUCHERRY: Tension prevailed in some parts of the town and suburban areas following the murder of a notorious criminal on Monday. Theisthan, an accused in several murder and robbery cases, was attacked by a group while he was at his residence in Reddiyarpalayam at around 11 a.m. They also hurled a country bomb on his face. Three persons, Muthu, Somu and Selvam, “discussing” with Theisthan an issue related to the labourers of Mettupalayam truck terminal, also sustained minor injuries, police said. While Somu and Selvam were admitted at the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute here, Muthu fled the venue immediately. Police did not rule out the involvement of Somu and Muthu in the incident. Immediately after the attack, Theisthan’s supporters blocked the entry of police into the area and protested the presence of Inspector of Reddiyarpalayam Ravi Kumar. The police team was allowed to enter the premises only after Mr. Ravikumar agreed to stay away. The supporters of Theisthan forced shopkeepers to down their shutters in Reddiyarpalayam, New Bus Stand and areas in Villianur and Bussy Street. Shops and other business establishments remained closed for most part of the day after the incident. They also damaged the windscreen of a car and the glass panels of two college buses at Reddiarpalayam when his body was taken to the General Hospital for post-mortem.
