BIDAR: The Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are engaged in a straight fight in the Aurad Assembly seat in Bidar district.

Both the parties are eyeing Maratha votes for the success of their candidates.

The Aurad seat is reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) after the delimitation process. The Congress has fielded Narsinghrao Suryawanshi of the Madiga community, hoping to cash in on SC votes. Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Prabhu Chavan is banking on Lambani votes.

Mr. Narsinghrao Suryawanshi is a native of Aurad taluk and has been in the scene since 1980 when he first contested the Bidar Parliamentary seat. He is contesting an Assembly seat for the first time.

Baburao Kadam of the Janata Dal (Secular) and Vaijanath Suryawanshi of the Bahujan Samaj Party are also in the fray, along with independents and candidates of other parties.

Support

Arunrao Patil, son of the former Maharashtra Ekikarna Samiti MLA Bapurao Patil, and the former Minister Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli are supporting Mr. Narsinghrao Suryawanshi.

Mr. Nagamarapalli’s support will help Mr. Narsinghrao Suryawanshi because the former has considerable clout in the constituency, having won the seat four times. This time, he is contesting from the Bidar constituency since Aurad has been made a reserved constituency.

The backing of Mr. Arunrao Patil, a Maratha leader, too will help Mr. Narsingrao Suryawanshi because the former has considerable clout in Aurad which has a high concentration of Maratha-speaking people.

Mr. Prabhu Chavan of the BJP is a supporter of the former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde. Mr. Chavan held the post of vice-president of the party’s Thane unit for six years.

He is planning to rope in Maharashtra BJP leaders including Mr. Munde, MLC Pasha Patel and Member of Parliament Hari Bhav Rathod for campaigning.

Although Maratha-speaking people are in considerable numbers in the constituency, it is the Lingayat voters who will determine the success of the candidate.

The former BJP MLA from Aurad Gundappa Vakil, who is a Lingayat, is said to be dissatisfied with the party. If he rebels, it could affect Mr. Chavan’s prospects.
